The digital divide in higher education the focus for the seventh volume of RUSC

The digital divide in higher education is the focus for the latest volume of the Revista de Universidad y Sociedad del Conocimiento (University and Knowledge Society Journal, RUSC). This UOC publication has now reached its seventh volume, which is to look at the question of universal access to ICT, focusing above all on that linked to university education.

Researchers in the DPCS research group publish a new book on mobile-learning

A group of researchers with the DPCS research group (distributed, parallel and collaborative systems) at the UOC research institutes, the IN3 and the eLearn Center, has recently published a book on Mobile-Learning: "Architectures for Distributed and Complex M-Learning Systems: Applying Intelligent Technologies". The publication focuses on Mobile-Learning with the aim of contributing to laying down the bases of the complex systems that provide support to this type of learning, characterised by its flexibility and freedom of place.

International experts debate the new revolution in 2.0 education at the UOC: Open Social Learning

International experts in the different theoretical and practical aspects of the use of ICT in education will meet in Barcelona at the Sixth International UOC eLearn Center UNESCO Chair in E-Learning Seminar, which this year will be discussing Open Social Learning (OSL), the new revolution in education 2.0. The seminar, which will be held on 30 November and 1 December, has already received some seventy enrolments from researchers from all over the world. It can also be followed on Twitter.

The UOC to take part in the International University Teaching and Research Conference

The 6th International University Teaching and Research Conference (CIDUI) which is to take place in 2010 has opened the call for presentation of symposium proposals until 15 January 2010. Cristina Girona, Albert Sangrà and Montse Guitert from the UOC's eLearn Center are on the Organising Committee, and Lourdes Guàrdia, from the Psychology and Educational Sciences Department, is to take part on the Conference's Scientific Advisory Board as a member of its standing committee. Cristina Girona is also the UOC's representative on the Executive Committee.

Second Life to host the next Innovation Forum

A small island in the virtual world of Second Life created by Barcelona Virtual is to host the UOC?s ninth Innovation Forum. The aim of this event, which is to take place on Thursday, 17 September, at 10am, is to explore the different possibilities and opportunities offered by this digital environment for learning and the creation of virtual communities.

UOC pilot course on Facebook to assess its potential for teaching

The aim of the pilot course being started in October on Facebook by the UOC is to test an open learning model in an open virtual environment on the internet based on the use of open educational resources and a methodology driven by interaction on social networks. It will be open to the whole of the social network?s community and last for two months. If there are positive results from the experience, the University will study offering some new subjects using social networks.

The eLearn Center welcomes the first international researchers

The UOC's eLearn Center, the first e-learning research and innovation centre in Spain and one of the few in Europe, is already welcoming its first international researchers. Inaugurated last February, the centre now has around one hundred members, including university faculty, researchers and management personnel. Seven research groups also form part of the centre: Net2learn, Capacitació digital (Digital Literacy), EDUS, EduL@b, Laboratori del Nou Turisme (New Tourism Lab), LabTM and Museia.

The UNESCO Chair in E-Learning organises a working session on Open Social Learning

The UOC UNESCO Chair in E-Learning has organised a meeting of experts for Tuesday 30 June to debate the state of Open Social Learning in Spain. The session is to take place in the Barcelonès Support Centre’s Auditorium and is to be divided into two parts: the first in the morning, which is open to the public, but requires registration in advance, and the second in the afternoon behind closed doors.

Professor Paul Kirschner to give a seminar on urban legends in modern education

The Visiting Professor at the UOC’s research institute, the IN3, and Director of Research on Lifelong Learning in Professions at the Open University of the Netherlands, Paul Kirschner, is to give a research seminar entitled “Urban Legends in Modern Education: Educational Innovation is Not a Question of Belief, I Believe!” on Thursday 26 March. The session is to be held in the IN3 building in Castelldefels, from 10.00am to noon.

The UOC sets up Spain’s first e-learning research and innovation centre with researchers from all over the world

The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia, UOC) is to open its eLearn Center this Friday – Spain’s first innovation and research centre, and one of the few in Europe. The centre will specialise in analysing the use of teaching and learning technologies, with particular emphasis on higher education and lifelong learning. The aim is to turn the UOC into an international authority in e-learning innovation and research thanks to the University’s own experience, and to contribute to innovation, research, specialised training and dissemination in the field.
