The Associate Companies Meeting invites Wikimedia's Head of Business Development
[19/02/2010]
The fourth UOC Associate Companies Meeting is to take place on Monday 22 February. This year's event is to involve Kul Wadhwa, Head of Business Development at the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organisation that manages the popular Wikipedia collaborative encyclopaedia. Imma Tubella, the UOC's President, is to open the event and Llorenç Valverde, Vice President of Technology, is to introduce the speaker.

Wadhwa is to offer a lecture entitled Online Strategies and New Lines of Business: the Wikimedia Phenomenon, in which he is to analyse some of the aspects that have led to this site being one of the most popular on the web. Those attending will have the chance to share their thoughts with Wadhwa during the Tech Talks which are scheduled to take place once the lecture is over.

The UOC's innovative new projects

The meeting will also provide an opportunity to present some of the latest projects being developed by the UOC to improve and strengthen its educational, technological and operational activities. The Open Innovation Office is to present GPS/e-learning, a user-support system that helps customise the tracing of users' professional and educational careers.

Another project to be presented by the Open Innovation Office is UOC Socialnet, a search engine designed in partnership with Bestiario to track the work of authors linked to the UOC, and establish links between them and other external authors.

The Office of Learning Technologies is to present the TRIA project, an application which allows for the conversion of the UOC's teaching materials into any of the increasingly popular new media, including electronic ink, MP4 or Daisy. Another new development from the Office of Learning Technologies to be addressed is e-PAPER, a prototype e-book reader designed for UOC students.

Iolanda Garcia, Director of the eLearn Center's Innovation Area, is to present the Ibero-American Horizon Report: Emerging Technologies in the Context of Latin America, Portugal and Spain. The study identifies trends in the use of technology and their application in higher education in Ibero-America so as to contribute to their development.

Finally, Dr Ferran Lalueza is to talk about the interactive simulator for cooperative management of crisis communication – a tool that can be vital in a context, such as that of corporate communication, where crisis communication has taken on a growing level of importance.

Networking

Lunch has been arranged to follow the meeting, which is the ideal moment for networking among those attending – one of the main aims of the event. Since the start, these meetings have helped create synergies between the UOC and the associate companies, and aided the sharing of thoughts and experiences. Over a hundred and seventy companies, bodies and associations form part of this knowledge transfer network.
