These results come from the tenth survey of internet users presented by the Asociación para
la investigación de medios de comunicación (Association for Communication Media Research, AIMC) for
2007, which profile the internet users accessing nearly three hundred web pages and portals. Of the
41,667 users who voluntarily answered the questionnaire last year, 895 said they used the UOC
portal, which made it one of the top 20 pages visited, a position the University has held for some
years.
According to the survey, UOC portal users were above average technology users in 2007. Thus,
71.1% said they connected to the internet from a laptop computer, above the 59.9% overall average.
Another highlight was the fact that 86.4% of those surveyed about the University’s website
made use of electronic payment systems with their credit cards, 13.1% more than the average. They
also make purchases over the internet more than most, 84.7% of portal users said they had, compared
to the 75% on average.
Daily from work
One of the details about UOC portal users that stands out from the overall figures is their
daily use of the internet. 68.6% connected from work, as opposed to the average of 43.3%. More than
half have been internet users for more than 8 years; 57.8% compared to 42% of the total. The
University portal users consulted also stated that they were above average internet users; 27% said
that they used it between 30 and 60 hours a week, 3% more than all those surveyed, and 36.4%
between 10 and 30 hours (1.6% more than the total). One in four visitors to the UOC portal surveyed
(27.4%) said they had more than 3 email addresses, as opposed to the average of 21.3%.
The profile of users matched that of UOC students: exactly half are women (50.1%), above the
average (32%), almost half are between 25 and 34 years of age (9.6% more than the average) and
91.3% said they were in work, above the 73% overall. 67.2% were university graduates and 30.5% used
the internet for academic purposes.
